What can we learn about war from the experience of playing with drones?
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) were originally developed by the military for strategic military purposes ie. military missions too "dull, dirty or dangerous" for humans.
What we know of the reality of these machines is that drones devastate populations and kill innocent lives.
And yet modern-day drones are used not only for military and war purposes, but also for entertainment and play. And yet regardless of purpose or use, the name remains the same, a drone is a drone. Letโs talk about this.
In this two-hour hands-on meet-up we invite a small group of 8-10 participants to get hands-on with small videodrones in an effort to contemplate together through critical discourse, what does this experience tell us about the realities of war?
This meet-up will consist of introductions to each other and to the technology at hand, namely tiny Tello drones. You will work together in small teams and get hands-on with the controls in their miniature form. Afterward we will discuss together if and how this experience changes our understanding of these tools, and what these micro observations have to do with cataclysmic macro realities.

Rachel Uwa is an artist, educator, organizer and founder of School of Machines, Making & Make-Believe. Currently, she designs and curates all of the programming of the school.
School of Machines, Making & Make-Believe, founded in Berlin, Germany in 2014, creates one-of-a-kind hands-on learning experiences in the areas of art, technology, design, and human connection. Through a series of online and in-person courses, we develop unique educational programs to teach the latest technologies while simultaneously questioning their usage, the world around us, and ourselves. Our goal is to create programming that leaves participants activated; not only equipped with technical and hands-on tools and skillsets, but also critically-minded and more deeply engaged. https://www.schoolofma.org/signals
